The staff and Governors of Withycombe Raleigh Primary School would like to extend a warm welcome to you.

We are a large Church Primary School situated on the outskirts of the wonderful seaside town of Exmouth in East Devon.

We all work very hard to ensure every child in our care is given the opportunity to reach their full potential so that they leave us well-equipped to enter into their next stage of education and on into the challenges of adult life.

Our school is dedicated to creating a happy, stimulating learning environment supported by the Christian values of love, respect and trust. You can find out more about our Christian Values on the

About Us page.

Parent Survey Results, April 2017

Following an Ofsted Inspection on 19 April 2017, we are delighted to report that our school continues to be Good.

The visit was the first short inspection carried out since the school was judged to be good in July 2013.

I am delighted with the content of the Ofsted report and believe it reflects much of what our school is all about.

As Headteacher I am very proud of our school and all our staff - our skilled Teachers, TAs, Governors and our pupils.  It is great that others recognise the hard work and commitment we all give to ensure we make a real difference to the lives and achievements of the children in our care.

We would also very much like to thank the parents and children who wrote in, or took the online survey in support of the school - your responses were taken into consideration during the inspection.

Stephen Powley, Headteacher

This report is great recognition of the quality of our staff and the vision of our governors and leadership team.

We are immensely proud of the report which says our growing school 'has sensitively maintained the ethos of a school which promotes the well-being of pupils and staff and strives for high academic standards.'

We take this opportunity to thank our parents and carers for their continued support, and thank our wonderful teachers for embracing the many changes imposed over recent months.

Alison Cooper, Chair Governors

Extracts from the 2017 Ofsted Report

The full report has been published on the Ofsted website - see Quick Links

Since the previous inspection, the school has grown significantly. You have successfully steered the school through the extension of the school premises.

You have sensitively maintained the ethos of a school which promotes the well-being of pupils and staff and strives for high academic standards.

As one parent expressed it, ‘you have built a large school with small school principles’.

Pupils and parents value how you maintain the wide breadth of the curriculum and provide many opportunities for pupils to take part in musical and sporting activities.

You are ambitious for the school and, together with your strong leadership team, are driving forward the school’s continuous improvement.

The report also states:

  • Across the school, pupils are enthusiastic learners who work diligently.
  • Attainment has risen steadily, particularly at the higher standard.
  • You have raised teachers’ expectations of what pupils can achieve.
  • Pupils are keen writers. For example, Year 6 pupils wrote with great empathy when recording the feelings of a soldier at Dunkirk.
  • Pupils edit their writing and proudly publish it on displays around the school.
  • Ambitious targets for disadvantaged pupils are checked regularly and you use assessment information to precisely identify pupils’ needs and inform future support.

Leadership observations:

You rightly value the challenge and support you receive from skilled governors. They have a detailed knowledge of the school’s priorities and regularly check the effectiveness of leaders’ actions.

The culture of safeguarding is strong across the whole school.

All staff are trained effectively in line with the latest safeguarding guidance.

Pupils feel safe in school … and wholeheartedly believe that teachers deal with any problems between pupils swiftly and effectively.

The vast majority of parents who replied to Ofsted’s online questionnaire agree that the school responds well to any concerns they raise.
